Director’s Note
Like many musical theater fans, I have been obsessed with Stephen Sondheim’s Company since I first heard the original cast album in 1970. It was totally unlike anything that had preceded it: a story that veered from theatrical realism to expressionistic fantasies; a score that infused Broadway traditions with the pulsating rhythms and complex harmonies of contemporary music; and lyrics that reflected the complex psychologies of its characters with sardonic wit and aching romanticism. More than half a century after its premiere, Company is still startlingly contemporary, capturing the jangled excitement of life in New York City while exploring the contradictory hopes, fears and expectations of human relationships. Utterly unique, brilliantly funny and unexpectedly moving, Sondheim’s landmark work is one of the most captivating results of his genius–and a rollicking piece of theater magic.
